Kilimanjaro

Climb to the roof of Africa, and stand on the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
Namaste Mountaineering will take you on a 9 day trip, supporting a "trek high and sleep low" method, giving the best chance of summit success. We will take the Machame route, it's steep in places and you'll get to climb the Great Barranco Wall, with some challenging, but not technical climbing.
Mount Kilimanjaro summit sits at 5895m and during your trek you'll be exploring the National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, full of evergreen rainforests.
Namaste Mountaineering leader Adam will take guided meditation and yoga classes, this will help you get a restful sleep preparing you for the next day.
There will be 6 nights on the mountain, supported by a local crew of mountain guides, cooks and porters, they're a brilliant group and enjoy a good song and dance! Be prepared to smile.

Day 4 - 10.8km trekking Shira Camp (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m) We start on moorland and it's a big change from the previous days. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and finally reach Barranco camp. It is on this day that some climbers may start to become breathless. The day has been spent at altitudes of up to 4600m at Lava Tower, but we sleep lower to help you acclimatise. Time: approximately 8 hours. All meals included. Day 5 - 5.5km trekking Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m) This day is a little easier and should really help you acclimatise. We start by trekking down into the ravine, then up the Great Barranco Wall. This is a big climb, but not technical. We then trek towards the Karanga valley. If you are able to join us we can include an acclimatisation trek up to 4200m in the afternoon, coming back down for dinner. Time: approximately 5 hours. All meals included. Day 6 - 3km trekking Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m) After breakfast we set off on our walk to Barafu camp at 4640m. We need an early night to prepare for summit attempt the next day. It’s a tough slope for a walk and you will feel the altitude. On arriving at camp we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important to keep well hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner to allow for a snooze ready for set up around midnight to start the climb to the summit. Time: approximately 3 hours. All meals included. Day 7 - 13.4km - summit and start of descent Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m), down to Millennium Camp (3790m) At about midnight we start to walk steeply up to the summit glaciers. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours to reach Stella Point where you’ll hopefully get to see an incredible sunrise. A little more walking and some amazing views of Mawenzi peak, then we reach Uhuru Peak! We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then a trek back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest. Time: up to 15 hours. All meals included. Day 8 - 12.1km descent Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m) This is a gentle trek back through the rainforest and you arrive at camp gate, we complete some paperwork and you get your certificate! Day 9 - Goodbyes We’ll get you back to the airport in time for your flight.
  • FAQ
What travel insurance do I need? You are required to have extensive travel insurance that will cover you to summit Kilimanjaro (5895m). We recommend BMC or Campbell-Irvine: https://www.thebmc.co.uk/modules/insurance/ https://www.campbellirvinedirect.com/CIDirect/index.html What currency do I need? US Dollars are accepted in most places but the local currency is Tanzanian shillings and they are accepted everywhere. What are the passport and Visa requirements? Yes, all British passport holders need a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. You need to apply online before travel. Tanzania now operates an ‘e-visa’ system. Identify Weru Weru River Lodge, Moshi Town as the place you will be staying. Your passport will need to be valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of your visa application. Apply here: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa/ Do I need vaccinations? Normally, travellers just need to be up to date with vaccinations and boosters as recommended in the UK. However, at least 8 weeks before your trip, check the latest country-specific health advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre on the TravelHealthPro website: https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/220/tanzania#Vaccine_recommendations What tip is recommended? Adam will collect the recommended $200 per person. This is collected before the climb. At the end of the trek there is a farewell ceremony where tips are distributed to our local guides. Our guides are paid, but tipping is an expected part of the Tanzanian culture and they will rely on this additional part of their pay. Do I need to be super fit? No you don't. The trek is classed as a challenge, due to the number of days spent hiking, and the altitude at which you will be operating. All our treks take a nice steady pace which helps with acclimatisation so that you will have an enjoyable experience. It helps if you have a solid base-level of fitness, but don't worry, if you have any concerns get in touch and we can put together a fitness plan. You will also be invited to one of our Trek Prep weekends, which will allow you to experience trekking on similar terrain. Is there any technical climbing? This is a trekking route, you will need to climb some sections, but there is no technical climbing. There are certainly some steep sections, so be prepared for a challenge. What kit do I need for the trek? We will send you a detailed kit list with your registration forms. You won’t need any technical or expensive kit for Kilimanjaro, but you will need a good sturdy pair of boots and a warm sleeping bag (3-4 season). Your kit for the trek will need to be in a duffel bag, not a hard suitcase as the porters will help carry it up to the camps for you. You will need a rucksack for the kit you need for each day, which you will carry. What will the weather be like? Temperatures on Mount Kilimanjaro range from really warm down to very, very cold. The difference from the park gate to the peak of Kilimanjaro is stark, as you pass through numerous climate zones during your time on the mountain. The rainforest zone, heath moorland, alpine desert zone and arctic zone all have different climates. The temperatures decrease as you get higher and can be as low as minus 20 (celsius) at the top. Average temperatures in Moshi from July to September are 21 degrees Celsius. Why the 7 day Machame route? Mainly because we want to get you to the top successfully. The 7 days allow for more time acclimatising. It also gives us a shorter day of hiking just before the summit attempt, contributing further to the success rate of this option. Is Kilimanjaro busy? There are 7 recognised routes to Kilimanjaro summit - they start to join together towards the top, so some of the higher camps will be busier. You will meet many people going up and coming down and you will find this actually adds to the experience. It will never feel busy or overcrowded, but we do go at the best time of year, so you will not be alone. Can I leave things at the hotel in Moshi? You are able to leave whatever you need to in your accommodation. Passports and money can be kept ready for your return, there is a safe, but these items are left at your own risk. Do I need to bring my own snacks and treats? Yes, you are welcome to bring your favourite snacks. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided on the mountain each day, so you won’t need much, maybe one or two snacks per day. Can I book my own private trip? Of course you can! if you would like this option please do get in touch and we can set this up based on your dates and requirements.
